Yemen has called upon the United Nations Security Council to pressure the Houthi militants to respond positively to the Saudi-led Arab Coalition's ceasefire announced unilaterally on Thursday.
Responding to a UNSC press statement that welcomed the Saudi initiative and called on Houthis to make "a similar commitment", Yemen welcomed the statement but called on the UNSC and the whole international community "to pressure on this militia into responding to the initiative and to hold them accountable for their maximalist avoidance and rejection (of peace)."
A statement by the Yemeni foreign ministry said the Yemeni government's cease of military action was in response to the directives of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi and the "UN Secretary General's call to refocus (efforts on) prevent the outbreak of the novel coronavirus" and pave the road for the success of the UN Special Envoy Martin Griffiths' efforts to resume the political process based on the peace references and on the national constants.
