Taiz Governor Nabil Shamsan discussed Saturday with the UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen Julian Harness solutions to alleviate water crisis in the governorate.
The governor praised the significant efforts aimed at finding solutions to the water crisis, which has worsened with the delayed rainy season.
He emphasized that ongoing measures to resume water pumping from al-Hawban and Talouk project remain critical solutions to mitigate the crisis, while the local authority is making every effort to secure funding for the establishment of a desalination plant to provide a permanent solution to this long-standing issue.
Governor Shamsan highlighted the importance of pumping water from all fields in al-Hawban, the city and al-Dabab to the local water authority’s Tanks.
He called for a clear distribution mechanism and operational and technical procedures, emphasizing the need for full coordination to restart operations under UN supervision to deliver water through the local network to citizens.
For his part, the Director of the Local Water and Sanitation Authority in the governorate Engineer Wathiq al-Aghbari presented a map of the fields and wells that used to pump water to the city, along with ongoing efforts to resume water pumping to the authority’s reservoirs and establish a fair distribution map.
The UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator expressed hope for resuming water pumping from Al-Hobban to the citizens, outlining the efforts being made for coordination and follow-up, completing the maintenance work of wells, pumps, and transport lines, as well as arranging technical procedures to reach an agreement that would restore water pumping and alleviate the water crisis in the city in the coming days.
