RIYADH - SABA
Chairman of the Presidential Council Dr. Rashad Mohammed al-Alimi received Sunday the Ambassador of the Republic of India, Suhail Ijaz Khan.
The meeting discussed the distinguished historical relations between the two friendly countries and the latest developments in local conditions at various levels.
It also touched on the necessary international support for economic reforms and the tangible improvement in the value of the national currency, thanks to the coordinated measures between the government, the Central Bank and support from brothers and friends.
President al-Alimi praised the longstanding cooperative and friendly relations between the two countries, expressing his appreciation, along with his fellow council members and the government, for India’s historical stance towards the Yemeni people and their legitimate government and for its humanitarian interventions, including wheat shipments, medical assistance, medicines and COVID-19 vaccines.
He also expressed his gratitude for the scholarship and training programs offered by India to Yemenis through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and the Technical and Economic Cooperation Program, which many students and trainees have benefited from in recent years.
He highlighted the commercial and economic partnership between the two countries, noting that despite exceptional circumstances, trade between the two nations reached approximately one billion dollars in the past year.
He expressed hope for greater facilitation for importing Indian wheat at preferential prices and support for food security projects, such as the development of grain and vegetable production.
He emphasized India’s vital role in ensuring maritime security and global navigation in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which requires support for the legitimate government to end the Houthi threat, as it is the true guarantor of stability and a capable partner in enhancing mutual interests in security and development.
For his part, the Indian Ambassador affirmed his country’s support for the security and stability of Yemen, the integrity of its territory, and the close cooperation with the Presidential Leadership Council and the government to advance bilateral relations to broader horizons and face common challenges at all levels.
He also announced plans to relocate the Indian Consular Services Office to the temporary capital, Aden and to study various support programs for the Yemeni government and people.
