NEW YORK – SABA
The UN Security Council has strongly condemned the Houthi military escalation in Yemen and continued attacks against Saudi Arabia, calling for an immediate halt to assaults targeting civilians and civil infrastructure.
In a presidential statement, the Council members reaffirmed their support for Yemen’s government and the country’s unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
They also urged full implementation of Resolution 2216 and called for measures to prevent the Houthis from obtaining weapons and military-related assistance.
The Council condemned Houthi attacks and threats against commercial shipping in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait, stressing the need to protect vessels and their crews and uphold international law.
The UN Security Council Members also reaffirmed their support for UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg’s efforts to secure an inclusive, Yemeni-led political settlement, emphasizing that lasting peace cannot be achieved through violence or coercion.
The statement further condemned attacks on Saudi Arabia, including those targeting civil aviation and energy infrastructure, expressed condolences to the victims’ families, and reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s inherent right to self-defence under international law.
