Transport Minister Mohsen Haidara al-Omari stressed the importance of establishing a National Maritime Security Committee to coordinate Yemen’s response to growing maritime threats in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden and Bab al-Mandab Strait.

Speaking at the conclusion of a five-day workshop in Aden, al-Omari cited recent Houthi attacks on Mokha Port involving ballistic missiles, drones and explosive-laden boats, which damaged port infrastructure and caused casualties.

He said the committee would unify the efforts of naval forces, coast guards, ports, customs and other relevant authorities, strengthen maritime security and protect international navigation.

The committee would also prepare a national maritime security strategy covering coastal protection, port and shipping security, fisheries, maritime investment, legislation and international cooperation.

Participants called for the urgent establishment of the committee following the workshop, which was organized by Yemen’s Maritime Affairs Authority with support from the International Maritime Organization.
