RIYADH-SABA
Presidential Leadership Council Member Abdulrahman al-Muharrami met today with US Chargé d’Affaires to Yemen Neil Hop to review the latest developments in Yemen and the region and discuss several issues of mutual concern.
The talks addressed political, security and military developments, including the threats posed by the Iranian-backed Houthi militia and their repercussions for the security of Yemen and the wider region. The meeting also covered the militia’s continued attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea, threats to international navigation and global trade routes, and the growing risks to the safety of international maritime corridors.
Al-Muharrami and Hop reviewed bilateral relations and ways to broaden cooperation, strengthen partnership and coordination, and create wider opportunities for collaboration that serve the interests of both countries and promote greater understanding.
The discussions also focused on the efforts of the Presidential Leadership Council and the government to reinforce security and stability, strengthen state institutions and improve their performance, while addressing economic and humanitarian challenges. They also considered measures to enhance the capabilities of national institutions in combating terrorism and smuggling and safeguarding maritime security.
Al-Muharrami highlighted the importance of continued US and international support for the legitimate government and sustained pressure on the Houthi militia to end its attacks, threats and violations and to cut off its sources of financing and arms. Such efforts, he said, would help contain the militia’s threats to Yemen, the region and international shipping and contribute to creating conditions conducive to peace and stability.
The meeting further emphasized the need for stronger security cooperation and coordination between Yemen and the United States, particularly in counterterrorism and combating smuggling, as well as continued support for the capabilities of national institutions to confront challenges and protect the country’s security and interests.
For his part, the US Chargé d’Affaires reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to continued cooperation with the Yemeni government, supporting efforts to strengthen security and stability and combat terrorism, and backing initiatives aimed at achieving peace and alleviating the suffering of the Yemeni people.
