RIYADH – SABA
Parliament Speaker Sheikh Sultan al-Barakani met on Tuesday with the US Ambassador to Yemen Stephen Fagin on the occasion of ending his tenure as US Ambassador to Yemen.
The Speaker praised Ambassador Fagin’s role during his time in office and the efforts he made to strengthen bilateral relations between the two friendly countries, as well as his support for Yemen and its constitutional legitimacy.
He also commended the United States’ supportive positions toward the Yemeni people and their aspirations to restore state institutions and achieve a just and lasting peace. He wished the ambassador success in his future endeavors.
The two sides discussed recent political, economic and humanitarian developments in Yemen, along with the challenges facing the country as a result of the continued coup by the Houthi terrorist militia and the severe damage it has inflicted on state institutions, the national economy, and the living conditions of citizens.
Al-Barakani emphasized the importance of the strategic partnership between Yemen and the United States, describing it as a key pillar in supporting efforts to restore state institutions, strengthen security and stability, and confront regional threats, particularly Iranian interference in support of the Houthi militia.
The Speaker also renewed his strong condemnation of what he described as Iran’s blatant terrorist attacks targeting the sisterly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and several countries in the region.
He stated that such actions constitute a flagrant violation of the sovereignty, security, and stability of states and reflect the nature of Iran’s regional project, which he said is based on interference in the internal affairs of countries, the management of crises, and the fueling of conflicts.
For his part, Ambassador Stephen Fagin expressed pride in his period of service in Yemen and reaffirmed his country’s continued support for Yemen, its people, and efforts to achieve peace and stability.
He highlighted U.S. support for the continued engagement of international financial institutions, particularly the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, in assisting the legitimate government and supporting economic reform efforts.
