TAIZ - SABA
Governor of Taiz Nabil Shamsan discussed Sunday with the new Country Director of the World Food Program (WFP) in Yemen Dr. al-Khidr Daloum the program's activities in the governorate, areas of joint cooperation, and ways to develop the strategic partnership toward empowerment and resilience projects while strengthening food security.
Governor Shamsan praised the humanitarian efforts made by the World Food Program to ease the severity of the living crisis despite funding challenges.
He affirmed that the programme is the main supporter of the governorate and that its diverse interventions have helped strengthen the resilience of Taiz residents and deliver assistance to a wide range of beneficiaries.
He also reviewed the extensive damage caused by the recent weather depression in the governorate, noting that around 34,000 families were affected by the climate-related consequences, which requires an urgent response to address these challenges.
For his part, Dr. al-Khidr Daloum praised the cooperation and facilitation provided by the local authority in Taiz.
He explained that the program is operating according to a strategy aligned with the priorities of the Yemeni government for 2026, with a focus on building local capacities and shifting from emergency relief toward sustainable development.
The Governor of Taiz and the Country Director also conducted a field visit to the school kitchen project (school meals) at al-Salam School in al-Mudhaffar District funded by the program in partnership with the Human Development Programme (HDP).
Shamsan and Daloum reviewed the work in the kitchen, which follows the highest international safety standards.
The Country Director expressed his satisfaction with this achievement, which embodies the concept of resilience.
He emphasized that school nutrition is a key pillar for attracting students and enhancing the educational process.
He also noted that harmony between nutrition patterns at home and at school lies at the heart of the programme’s new strategy.
The project benefits 28 schools in al-Mudhaffar District, where a total of 1,227,179 meals have been distributed through “Al-Salam Kitchen” over 92 days.
Meanwhile, “al-Shaab Kitchen” benefits 27 schools across three districts, with a total of 1,792,800 meals distributed over 128 days.
