RIYADH – SABA
His Excellency President Dr. Rashad al-Alimi, the Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, received Thursday the United Nations Special Envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg.
During the meeting, the President was briefed by the UN envoy on the outcomes of his recent contacts, particularly regarding the detainees’ file and the prospects of building on current developments to push the Houthi militia toward responding to the will of the Yemeni people and their aspirations to restore national institutions, security, stability and peace.
The meeting also addressed local developments and the progress made in normalizing conditions in the liberated governorates, as well as efforts to move forward with unifying security and military decision-making.
President al-Alimi praised efforts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in advancing peace pathways in Yemen and the region, in addition to its appreciated humanitarian interventions to improve living conditions for the Yemeni people, support economic recovery and rebuild national state institutions.
He reaffirmed the Yemeni state’s commitment to the option of peace based on nationally, regionally and internationally agreed references, in a manner that ensures ending the coup and the humanitarian suffering caused by the Iran-backed Houthi terrorist militia.
The President also touched on ongoing regional developments, including announced de-escalation initiatives, stressing that they cannot be relied upon without addressing the root of the problem linked to the Iranian regime’s approach of exporting crises, threatening the sovereignty of national states and usurping their exclusive authorities through rogue groups.
He explained that sustainable peace in the region will not be achieved unless the Iranian regime abandons its primary sources of threat, namely ballistic missiles and drones, as well as its proxy armed groups used to destabilize the region’s security and stability.
President al-Alimi affirmed that the continued hostile approach of the Houthi militia, its sectarian structure and its cross-border attacks keep the objective of restoring national institutions—by peace or by force—at the forefront of the priorities for which the Presidential Leadership Council was formed around this time four years ago.
He considered the militia’s involvement in defending the Iranian regime as further conclusive evidence that it is not an independent party, but rather a disruptive tool within the broader Iranian project.
The President expressed his hope that United Nations reports will clearly reflect the consequences of the Houthi militia’s continued hijacking of the decisions of war and peace, its involvement in regional conflicts in service of the Iranian regime and its daily violations against civilians through various forms of repression and abuse.
He stressed the importance of not reducing the overall assessment of the situation to a decline in large-scale escalation, while children and women continue to fall daily by sniper’s bullets and Houthi-laid landmines prohibited under international law.
