Minister of Water and Environment Engineer Tawfiq al-Sharjabi, along with a team from the World Bank headed by the Regional Director for Agriculture, Water and Environment sectors in the Middle East and North Africa region Mekarim Berhani, conducted Monday a field visit to several water and sewage projects in Aden Governorate, funded by the World Bank through the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).
Minister al-Sharjabi and the international team, accompanied by representatives from UNOPS, reviewed the progress of the rehabilitation project for the main pumping station in the al-Mualla District and the sewage pumping line connecting al-Mualla and Khormakser Districts, which is 3,700 meters long and has a diameter of 630 mm made of polyethylene, with a total cost of $3,8m.
They also visited the al-Barzakh station in the Khormakser District, where they learned from the Director General of the Local Water and Sanitation Corporation in Aden Engineer Mohammed Bakhubaira about the project to establish a water pumping station, with a cost of $1.8 million, which includes building the station, digging cable trenches and pipe routes, in addition to performing electrical works, and supplying and installing eight horizontal pumps with flow rates of 230 liters/second and 100 liters/second.
Minister al-Sharjabi and the World Bank team also reviewed the progress at the Central Water Quality Testing Laboratory of the Local Water and Sanitation Corporation, and its vital role in monitoring water quality in terms of salts and chemical elements, in accordance with World Health Organization standards and Yemeni specifications, and the project to establish a solar energy system for the sewage pumping station in al-Teqaniah Area of the al-Mansoura District, which has an operational capacity of 132 kilowatts, being implemented by Tesla Company, at a cost of $91,145.
Minister al-Sharjabi emphasized the importance of World Bank-funded projects in developing the water and sanitation sectors and enhancing the sustainability of services provided to citizens.
He praised the partnership between the government and the World Bank as a key partner in development efforts, particularly in the water sector, expressing hope for increased funding to implement more projects in the water and sanitation sectors aimed at serving the community by providing safe and clean water and a healthy environment.
