Deputy Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Dr. Nazar Basuhaib discussed Monday with the Deputy UN Resident Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs in Yemen Dr. Iman al-Shanqeeti various topics related to updates on humanitarian work for the current year.
The meeting, which included the Director of the UN Resident Coordinator's Office in Yemen, Luric Postina and several specialists from the ministry, addressed the progress of humanitarian assistance and development projects implemented by UN organizations funded by American grants, as well as the impact of the suspension of these grants.
The discussions also covered the ongoing measures to launch a conference to support the humanitarian response plan for Yemen and how to deal with upcoming activities and projects in areas controlled by the terrorist Houthi militias, in light of the Houthis being classified as a terrorist organization and the ongoing arbitrary violations by the militias regarding the detention of humanitarian workers.
Dr. Basuhaib reviewed the general situation in the country and the government's efforts to provide basic services, improve the living standards of citizens, and achieve economic reforms.
He highlighted the repercussions of the suspension of some projects and assistance on the humanitarian situation due to the deficits resulting from reduced funding and the halt of American grants provided to UN-affiliated organizations, as well as the potential to fill funding gaps to complete ongoing projects.
He pointed out the government's plan on how to handle current developments and events, as well as possible visions to unify and enhance joint efforts with partners from UN organizations to meet basic humanitarian needs.
He praised the efforts and interventions of all UN organizations in assisting the government and implementing various activities that have contributed to alleviating the humanitarian crisis in Yemen.
For her part, the Deputy UN Resident Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs in Yemen explained that the UN is keen to monitor the impact of the suspension of American support on some activities, study its implications, and communicate with the legitimate government to stay informed about any updates.
She reaffirmed the UN's support for the government's efforts to mitigate the humanitarian crisis and coordinate with all partners to continue providing assistance and implementing projects.
In a separate context, the Deputy Minister of Planning and International Cooperation discussed with the Country Director of Medair in Yemen Evelyn Sabtch the organization's interventions in the fields of health, nutrition, and water in Dhale'a and Lahj governorates, as well as the level of achievement of the implemented projects.
