ADAN - SABA
Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism Muammar al-Eryani stated that the recent meeting of the UN envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg with several leaders of the Iranian-backed Houthi militia, some of whom are listed as terrorists and involved in serious human rights violations, to demand the release of UN and international organization employees held in the militia's prisons since June 2024, indicates a clear failure in his performance and a deviation from the course of his mission.
Al-Eryani clarified in a press statement that the priorities of the UN envoy to Yemen have become limited to repeated demands for the Houthi militia to release UN and international organization employees held in Houthi prisons, instead of focusing on implementing relevant international legitimacy resolutions concerning the Yemeni file, enforcing international and humanitarian laws, and supporting efforts to establish peace in Yemen.
Al-Eryani pointed out that this deviation reveals a real crisis in UN diplomacy regarding the Yemeni issue. Instead of being a bridge for implementing international resolutions and achieving a comprehensive political settlement based on nationally, regionally, and internationally agreed references, the UN envoy finds himself trapped in minor issues, such as demanding the release of detainees.
Al-Eryani emphasized that this approach is insufficient to keep pace with the major political and security challenges imposed by the Iranian-backed Houthi coup and the scale of humanitarian suffering in Yemen.
It reflects a clear failure to confront these challenges and complicates the opportunities for achieving peace.
He stressed that this situation also reflects an increasing disregard from the Houthi militia for the international community, which has become incapable of imposing any real pressure on them. Instead of there being a serious commitment from the militia to implement international resolutions and adhere to the terms of agreements signed under UN auspices, foremost among them the Stockholm Agreement, the Houthis continue to be obstinate and escalate, benefiting from the absence of international firmness.
Al-Eryani called on the UN envoy to take responsibility for the failure of his policies, which have not contributed to changing the reality on the ground, instead of getting bogged down in minor issues.
He urged the UN to reassess its strategy in Yemen and establish a stronger and more effective mechanism for implementing international resolutions that contribute to achieving peace and stability in Yemen and safeguarding regional and international security and peace, away from complacency in confronting terrorism and Houthi arrogan
