LAHJ-SABA
Lahj Deputy Governor Salah al-Dawoudi has called for urgent humanitarian intervention by Oxfam to address the growing needs of displaced families in the governorate, as successive waves of displacement overwhelm local response capacities.
During a meeting with Bahaa Mohammed, Oxfam Yemen’s food security officer, the two sides discussed expanding the organization’s humanitarian assistance and implementing development projects across Lahj’s districts.
The meeting reviewed the influx of tens of thousands of families into safer districts from Lahj’s Al-Subaiha areas and neighboring governorates, fleeing attacks by the Houthi terrorist militia. The resulting humanitarian needs have exceeded the capacity of local responders, requiring urgent assistance commensurate with the scale of the crisis.
Discussions focused on expanding support for affected families through food assistance and unconditional cash transfers, including direct payments and recurring distributions to help beneficiaries meet their essential needs.
Al-Dawoudi said the governorate’s leadership had directed efforts to strengthen engagement with international organizations and donors and channel assistance toward the most urgent needs of displaced families. He identified access to safe water and sanitation facilities as key priorities.
He also stressed the importance of sustained coordination between Oxfam and relevant local authorities, particularly the Executive Unit for Managing Displacement Camps, to prepare for the current winter season, identify settlements most vulnerable to rain and cold, and take measures to protect displaced communities and their shelters.
