ULAANBAATAR-SABA
Yemen took part today in the opening of the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP17), held in Mongolia’s capital, Ulaanbaatar, under the theme “Restore Land, Restore Hope.”
Yemen is represented at the conference by a delegation headed by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Eng. Ahmed al-Zamaki.
Yemen’s participation reflects the pressing need to step up national and international efforts to address land degradation, desertification and drought, while promoting sustainable management of natural resources, better use of water and soil, and stronger food and water security and livelihoods.
The Yemeni delegation, during the conference running through August 28, will follow discussions on international funding for desertification control and land restoration projects, drought response and early-warning systems. It will also explore opportunities for cooperation and the exchange of technology and expertise.
The delegation will further seek support for restoring rangelands and assisting pastoral communities, as well as for water and soil management projects that support food security.
It will also explore bilateral and multilateral partnerships and ways of involving the private sector in financing land restoration initiatives.
