Yemen warns UN against bowing to Houthi pressures to replace OHCHR Representative
[10/06/2020 03:32]

RIYADH-SABA
Yemen has warned the United Nations against bowing to pressures by the Houthi rebel militia to replace representative of the OHCHR in Yemen Elobaid Ahmed Elobaid.

The Human Rights Minister Mohammed Askar said in a press statement that if the UN "submits to the militia's will like it did when it replaced the Secretary General's former Special Envoy, this will give the militia the final word on the UN's decisions and will disallow the UN's freedom to conduct its business in line with the principles of impartiality and independence."

Since the September 2014 coup, the theocratic militia have been meddling into the affairs of the OHCHR and influencing its reports .

Four months ago, the militia denied a UN plane carrying UN staff including the OHCHR representative from landing in Sana'a airport and when the plane landed it was quickly forced to take off. Ever since, the militia have been banning the representative's entry and demanding his replacement in an obvious effort to subjugate UN staff to the militia's terms.

"The submission to the Houthi militia's will is in itself a violation that strips the UN and its organizations off their credibility," said Askar, adding that the government is considering all options to handle the developments.
