ADEN - SABA
Yemen's Foreign Minister warned the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization that the country's separatist council is endangering Socotra archipelago through increasing acts of vandalism.
Socotra, only 60 miles from the Horn of Africa, was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2008 for its exceptionally rich flora and fauna.
Minister Mohammed al-Hadhrami in a letter on Sunday demanded the UNESCO to condemn the separatist Southern Transitional Council which is waging violence acts in attempt to overthrow the government but leaving immense material damage in the island. Al-Hadhrami warned that the STC's destructive acts are adding up to the impact of the natural disasters especially the cyclones that hit the island in recent years.
Al-Hadhrami called on the UNESCO to assign an experts panel to assess the natural and man-made threats facing the unique sanctuary.
