ADEN-SABA
Civil society organizations in a number of government-held provinces have rolled out the 16-Day Activism Against Gender-based Violence, an international campaign that runs annually from 25 November to 10 December.
The Foundation of Development and Society Protection Advocates launched the event in the temporary capital Aden on Saturday. The foundation's chairwoman Akdar Mokhtar addressed inauguration ceremony saying the campaign will raise the awareness of school girls in al-Mansoora city in downtown Aden on gender-based violence and its impact.
In the province of Marib, north of Aden, the Yemen Women Union and other CSOs marked the international tradition with an awareness-raising seminar.
In a speech on behalf of the Association of Mothers of Abductees in the jails of the Houthi militia, Sabah Suweid said the Yemeni women have experienced various violations and abuses at the hands of the rebel militia; abductions, detention, assault and intimidation.
She said that many mothers were assaulted in their rallies demanding the release of their sons and husbands from the jails of the militia.
She and several participants called for furthering the appointment of women in decision-making positions, supporting micro-enterprise projects for women and initiating media campaigns on the importance of women empowerment.
