The UN Security Council has urged greater humanitarian access to famine-threatened Yemen, Somalia, South Sudan and northeast Nigeria in a session on international peace and security maintenance.
The UNSC expressed in a presidential statement today its serious concern about the threat of famine to more than 20 million persons in Yemen, Somalia, South Sudan and northeast Nigeria.
The Council expressed its displeasure at the failure of certain parties to guarantee the arrival of vital food aid shipments and other humanitarian aids for the needy.
The UNSC affirmed that the effective response to these crises requires a compliance by all parties with the international humanitarian law.
The UNSC made clear that the obligations for respecting and protecting civilians lie on the shoulders of all factions involved in the armed conflict.
He called on all conflict parties to take more measures to make humanitarian response more effective.
