RIYADH - SABA
The Republic of Yemen signed Monday two memoranda of understanding with the People's Republic of China to enhance joint cooperation between the two countries and open new avenues for strategic partnership.
The agreements were signed by the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Dr. Waed Badhieb and the Charge d'Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Yemen Shao Cheng.
The first agreement represents a comprehensive framework for development cooperation between the two countries, through which Yemen will join the Global Development Initiative proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The agreement includes several key areas, including poverty alleviation, enhancing food security, developing public health, supporting industrial transformation, addressing climate change and promoting green development, as well as building human capacities and communication in the digital era.
Under this agreement, China will provide grants, support and interest-free loans for development projects, in addition to providing resources from the Global Development Fund and establishing a joint dialogue mechanism for cooperation, with periodic in-person and virtual meetings to coordinate policies and exchange experiences.
The second agreement involves equipping the police and related equipment for Yemen's Ministry of Interior, where the Chinese Party will provide a grant for a batch of police equipment and transport it to the port of Mukalla as part of the free assistance offered to Yemen.
Following the signing, Dr. Waed Badhieb affirmed that the two memoranda represent a qualitative leap in Yemeni-Chinese relations, noting that they will pave the way for signing more agreements in various development fields.
He indicated that Yemen's joining the Global Development Initiative will enhance opportunities for obtaining funding for development projects and contribute to achieving sustainable development goals.
For his part, the Charge d'Affaires of the Chinese Embassy emphasized that these agreements reflect his country's commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership with Yemen, affirming that China will continue to support development efforts in Yemen across various sectors.
