CAIRO –SABA
The Speaker of the Arab Parliament, Dr. Meshaal Al-Salami, welcomed the prisoner exchange agreement between the government and the Houthi putschists as announced by the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy Martin Griffiths. The deal was sponsored by the Griffiths’ office and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Under the agreement, the government will release 618 prisoners, while the Houthi militia will release 400.
Al-Salami called for building on this agreement to reach another more comprehensive agreement to free all prisoners and detainees to close this issue of humanitarian dimensions.
Al-Salami stressed that this agreement, which comes in implementation of the Stockholm Agreement signed by the government and the Houthi militia under the auspices of the United Nations on December 13, 2018, should represent a strong motivation for the international community to pressure all parties, especially the Houthi militia to fully abide by the terms of the Stockholm Agreement and put an end to the continuous breaches and long foot-dragging.
