Env. Ministry participates in first meeting of Minamata conference

Minister of Water and Environment Dr. Izzi Shoreim has headed Yemen's delegation to the first meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury (COP1) which took place from 24 to 29 September 2017 at the International Conference Centre in Geneva.

Dr. Shoreim gave an overview about the national plan to implement the Convention, strategy to identify and tackle the mercury-polluted areas, and steps to minimize mercury emissions as per the respective plan.

The participants discussed the abstract legal aspects and real life applications of the Convention, reviewed the general and technical policies affecting its implementation, and identified the appropriate alternatives to mercury with a view to rendering this element into disuse in all fields.

The Deputy Minister for Environment Sector Ammar al-Areeqi participated in the delegation.
