Foreign Minister Dr. Afrah al-Zouba has called for a firm international stance against the Houthi terrorist militias and concrete measures to implement relevant UN Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2216.
During a phone call on Sunday with U.S. Chargé d’Affaires to Yemen Neil Hop, the minister discussed Houthi escalation, threats to international shipping, and regional security.
Al-Zouba stressed the need to restore state institutions, end the Houthi coup backed by Iran, and ensure that weapons and decisions of war and peace remain under state authority. She condemned Houthi abuses against civilians, child recruitment, and the siege and shelling of residential areas in Taiz.
She also called for measures to stop Iranian weapons, funding and military expertise from reaching the Houthis and emphasized the importance of securing international shipping routes, particularly the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait.
The minister welcomed U.S. support for the Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni government and called for stronger cooperation in counterterrorism, combating smuggling, and promoting regional stability.
For his part, the U.S. chargé d’affaires reaffirmed Washington’s support for Yemen’s unity, security and stability, condemned Houthi abuses against civilians, and stressed continued cooperation to protect international shipping.
