ADEN – SABA
State Minister in charge of Displacement and Irregular Migration Affairs Walid sl-Abara discussed Thursday via videoconference with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Netherlands to Yemen Janette Seppen the latest humanitarian developments and the catastrophic repercussions of the ongoing military escalation and violations by the Houthi militia on the displacement situation.
During the meeting, Minister al-Abara reviewed the critical humanitarian situation resulting from recent waves of displacement, which have affected nearly 200,000 citizens due to the brutal forced displacement carried out by the Houthi militia against residents in areas around Bab al-Mandab.
He highlighted the severe pressure faced by government institutions in providing shelter, camps, and emergency supplies, particularly during the first week of the crisis, as well as the difficulties encountered by international organizations in reaching those affected.
He noted that government interventions, in cooperation with partners, had succeeded in providing an emergency response to approximately 90,000 displaced people.
However, a significant funding and humanitarian assistance gap remains between existing needs and available interventions, particularly in the areas of shelter and food.
The minister warned of the risks posed by an expansion of the militia’s military operations, stressing that targeting Taiz and Marib would result in a real and unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe, threatening the lives of more than 3.5 million people in Taiz, as well as millions of displaced people in Marib.
For her part, the Dutch Ambassador reaffirmed her country’s steadfast support for the legitimate government and announced that the Kingdom of the Netherlands would provide additional funding to support the humanitarian response plan in Yemen.
