Minister of Water and Environment Eng. Tawfiq al-Sharjabi discussed Wednesday via video conference, with Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Yemen Thomas Schneider ways to strengthen bilateral relations and joint cooperation in the fields of water, environment, and climate change adaptation.

The two sides also exchanged information and sought to deepen their understanding of the conditions and challenges facing Yemen in these areas.

The meeting, attended by the German Deputy Ambassador, also addressed preparations for “Yemen Days” and the 25th annual Friends of Socotra Conference, scheduled to be held from September 23 to 25 under the joint organization of the Embassy of the Republic of Yemen in Berlin.

Minister al-Sharjabi said that the ministry had, over the past period, undertaken a number of communications, coordination efforts, and arrangements related to the conference.

He stressed the importance of holding the event to highlight the environmental and climate-related challenges facing Socotra Archipelago, raise awareness of its environmental significance, and showcase its unique biodiversity.

Minister Al-Sharjabi expressed his appreciation for the support provided by the Federal Republic of Germany to Yemen’s water sector and for Germany’s role as one of the supporters of the National Water Strategy.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining this support and expanding areas of partnership in a manner that contributes to developing the water sector and improving its services.

He also commended the role played by the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen in supporting development projects through the establishment of bilateral partnerships to implement a number of projects in Yemen.

He highlighted the importance of such partnerships in supporting development efforts and advancing the country’s service sectors and infrastructure.

For his part, German Ambassador Thomas Schneider praised the role played by the Ministry of Water and Environment in addressing water and environmental issues and strengthening cooperation and partnerships with international stakeholders.

He affirmed importance of sustaining these efforts and further developing coordination and cooperation between the two sides.

Ambassador Schneider underscored the importance of the conference scheduled for September as an opportunity to strengthen Yemeni-German cooperation.

He explained that the conference would focus on three main areas of cooperation between the two countries, including a dedicated project in the water sector, which would create broader opportunities for exchanging expertise, mobilizing support, and implementing priority projects in this vital sector.
