His Excellency President Dr. Rashad al-Alimi, Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) stated that any approach to put an end of the war in Yemen will never be successful, unless it deals with the Houthi militias as part of an Iranian cross-border scheme, and not as a local political party, warning that reducing any crisis of this kind to truces and arrangements for a ceasefire will lead to temporary risk management rather than building sustainable peace.

Minister of Finance Marwan Faraj bin Ghanem met Tuesday with the World Bank Vice President for the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan Ousmane Dione and his accompanying delegation.

The meeting discussed the latest developments in economic and financial conditions, as well as aspects of World Bank support for government efforts aimed at achieving stability and improvement in the national economy.

The meeting addressed the major challenges facing the economic and financial sectors, particularly in terms of public finance sustainability, strengthening state revenues and government efforts to implement comprehensive reforms, meet essential obligations, provide basic services and improve overall living conditions for citizens.

It also reviewed a number of ongoing projects being implemented in cooperation and coordination between the government—represented by the Ministry of Finance—and the World Bank.

These include institutional and public systems modernization, public finance review, trade facilitation and customs support, and coordination with the International Monetary Fund to resume Article IV consultations.

Additionally, the meeting discussed a package of priority needs and requirements for international technical support to the Ministry of Finance and its affiliated agencies (customs and taxation).

These include strengthening infrastructure, capacity building, training human resources, developing technical and technological programs, improving financial planning processes, and enhancing transparency, integrity, and governance principles.

Minister bin Ghanem emphasized the importance of continuing World Bank support to assist government efforts in addressing economic and financial challenges, finding necessary solutions to overcome them, ensuring the success of the state’s general budget, and achieving overall economic stability and improvement.

He also stressed support for the government’s continued implementation of comprehensive reforms across economic, financial, monetary, and administrative sectors, as well as combating corruption and eliminating its sources.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to intensifying efforts aimed at improving general conditions and reducing the worsening suffering of citizens in service, humanitarian, and living aspects.

He praised the ongoing sincere and brotherly support from Saudi Arabia to the Yemeni government and people, noting its pivotal role in improving general conditions.

He called on the World Bank, brotherly and friendly countries, and the donor community to continue supporting Yemen and its people to help alleviate humanitarian suffering amid the current difficult circumstances.
