Marib Deputy Governor discusses enhancing humanitarian partnership with UNDP, UNICEF
[14/08/2025 06:43]

MARIB - SABA
The Deputy Governor of Marib, Dr. Abd-Rabu Miftah held Thursday two separated meetings with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and UNICEF.

He discussed with them ways to enhance humanitarian partnership and the roles of both organizations in the governorate.

The meeting addressed interventions the two organizations provide and the possibility of expanding them in the future.

During his discussion with Eila Ali, the Director of the Durable Solutions for Internal Displacement project at UNDP, Miftah addressed the ongoing preparations for implementing the third phase of the Sustainable Development Solutions workshop for internal displacement in Marib, scheduled for next week in partnership with the government and local authorities.

The goal is to create a shared understanding of the key principles for addressing internal displacement.

Miftah emphasized the necessity of aligning sustainable development project plans with ongoing emergency response assistance to improve living conditions for newly displaced individuals continuously arriving in the governorate amid the repressive practices and violations committed by the Houthi militia, which is supported by the Iranian regime.

In his meeting with Peter Harvey, the Water and Sanitation Officer at UNICEF in Yemen, Miftah underscored the need for a broader role for international and UN organizations to bridge part of the humanitarian gap in various vital sectors, including livelihoods, economic stability, healthcare, education, water and shelter, given the significant pressure on public services and the increased burdens faced by local authorities.

Dr. Miftah praised the humanitarian efforts and projects implemented by UNDP and UNICEF in the governorate, which have alleviated some of the suffering of the displaced population that Marib has received, accounting for more than 62% of the total forcibly displaced individuals by the Houthi militia, along with over 35,000 illegal migrants from the Horn of Africa, in addition to the host community.

He also called on UN and international organizations to provide more livelihood projects to assist the displaced in achieving stability and alleviating the harsh economic and living conditions.

For their part, representatives from both organizations affirmed that the humanitarian situation of the displaced persons in Marib will be prioritized in future humanitarian projects, expressing their understanding of the significant burdens faced by local authorities in addressing the deteriorating economic situation of the displaced and the host community, while highlighting the substantial facilitation provided by local authorities for implementing their humanitarian interventions.
