Minister of Transport, Governor of Socotra inaugurate new airport in Socotra

Minister of Transport Dr. Abdulsalam Humaid, along with the Governor of Socotra Archipelago Raafat al-Theqli and the Chairman of the General Authority for Civil Aviation and Meteorology Captain Saleh Bin Nuhaid inaugurated Wednesday the Abd al-Kuri Island Airport in the governorate.

The Minister of Transport explained that the opening of the airport will help connect the island to the Socotra Archipelago and the country, as well as to the world.

He noted that the island has suffered from deprivation and isolation, lacking basic humanitarian, educational, health services, clean water and communication means for many years.

Minister Humaid affirmed that the ministry will give significant attention to Abd al-Kuri Island and the Socotra Archipelago, coordinating with the government and the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation to support vital projects.

He emphasized the importance of developing existing projects such as the airport and the port, thanking the United Arab Emirates for its contributions to the island and for the projects and services it has provided to Socotra and Yemen in general, which have helped improve the community's living conditions.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the General Authority for Civil Aviation and Meteorology indicated that the authority will focus on this airport and secure its needs for qualified personnel in air navigation as well as technical and administrative specialties. They will also work with the International Civil Aviation Organization to ensure that this airport receives a unique code like other airports in the country in the future.

For his part, the Governor of Socotra Archipelago expressed his immense happiness with this achievement, which contributes to connecting the island to the archipelago as a whole.

He clarified that there is a plan to build a housing unit comprising 95 homes, in addition to a hospital and a school, praising the support provided by the United Arab Emirates to the governorate.
