His Excellency President Dr. Rashad al-Alimi, Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) stated that any approach to put an end of the war in Yemen will never be successful, unless it deals with the Houthi militias as part of an Iranian cross-border scheme, and not as a local political party, warning that reducing any crisis of this kind to truces and arrangements for a ceasefire will lead to temporary risk management rather than building sustainable peace.

Local Administration Minister discusses with EU mission enhancing development projects

The Minister of Local Administration Eng. Badr Basalmah discussed Tuesday via video conference with the Head and members of the European Union Mission to Yemen led by Ambassador Patrick Simonnet the ministry’s strategic plans key development projects supported by the EU.

The meeting reviewed projects aimed at strengthening the capacities of local authorities, led by the Strengthening Institutional and Economic Resilience in Yemen (SIERY) project implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in several governorates.

Minister Basalmah also outlined the ministry’s work plan for the current year, which focuses on strengthening state institutions and regulating the relationship between the central government and local authorities, in addition to preparing a national strategy for implementing decentralization in a way that improves services and drives development.

He further pointed to preparations for holding a national conference early next May, bringing together the government and local authorities to frame their relationship and enhance the level of services provided to citizens.

For his part, Ambassador Patrick Simonnet emphasized the importance of adopting decentralization as an entry point for achieving stability and building peace, noting that strengthening security begins at the local level.

The EU mission reaffirmed its support for the efforts of the Ministry of Local Administration and its readiness to strengthen partnership and contribute to supporting this path.
