WASHINGTON-SABA
The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced today, Thursday, the inclusion of 32 individuals and entities, along with four ships, in its largest sanctions measure so far aimed at the Iranian regime-backed Houthi terrorist militias.
The U.S. Treasury Department explained in a statement that the networks targeted today are part of the Houthis' global illegal operations for raising funds, smuggling and purchasing weapons, and include companies linked to the Houthis and their owners located in Yemen, China, the UAE and the Marshall Islands.
The statement mentioned that the targets today finance and facilitate the Houthis' acquisition of advanced military materials, including components for ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones, which are used to attack American forces and their allies. Additionally, they target commercial shipping in the Red Sea, resulting in numerous civilian casualties, directly threatening the American economy, global trade, as well as peace.
The Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence John Hurley said "The Houthis continue to threaten U.S. persons and assets in the Red Sea, attack our allies in the region and undermine international maritime security in coordination with the Iranian regime".
He added "We will continue to exert maximum pressure on those who threaten the security of the United States and the region."
