Minister of Education Abdullah Lamlas has confirmed keenness of the government of Yemen on making and implementing policies to enable all Yemeni people to go to schools.
While the war in Yemen enters its four year, Yemen has become on the brink of famine and is facing now the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world, said Minister Lamlas in the high-level meeting on the strategic role for school nutrition for supporting education, sustainable development and stability in the Middle East area and North Africa.
Up to 22.2 million Yemeni people need basic support and 1.8 million children under five and 1.1 million pregnant women suffer severe malnutrition over the war triggered by Houthi rebel militia, he added.
The war has destroyed the educational system and deprived millions of children to go to school, he said citing that the 3600 of basic education schools have been shut down since the beginning of the war leading to depriving 1.9 million children from government schooling and nearly 2000 schools have been damaged and 67 percent of teachers have not received their salaries for more than two years, said Lamlas.
He confirmed that the government will work with the World Food Program and other partners on tackling school nutrition programs for making activities for capacity building for encouraging schooling.
