GENEVA-SABA

Yemen’s Ambassador to Switzerland and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Dr. Ali Mujawar, discussed recent developments in Yemen and the repercussions of Houthi escalation with Ambassador Monica Schmutz Kirgöz, Head of the Middle East and North Africa Division at the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.

Mujawar said the Houthi militia acts as an Iranian proxy seeking to replicate tensions in the Strait of Hormuz in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, threatening energy security and global supply chains.

He cited UN-documented evidence of operational and intelligence cooperation between the Houthis, al-Qaeda and Somalia's al-Shabaab, as well as the militia's involvement in transferring drone technology, naval mines and advanced explosive devices across the Red Sea.

The ambassador also highlighted recent Houthi missile and drone attacks that rendered Mokha's humanitarian port inoperable, targeted oil tankers in the Red Sea, and struck civilian sites in Marib, Hadramout, Hodeidah and Shabwa.

He called for firm international action to enforce UN Security Council resolutions, curb Iranian arms smuggling networks, secure the release of abducted UN and humanitarian workers, and support the Yemeni state and Coast Guard in protecting ports and international navigation.

The Swiss official reaffirmed her country's support for peace and humanitarian efforts in Yemen and continued coordination with the legitimate government.
