The United Kingdom has warned of a dangerous escalation by the Iranian-backed Houthi terrorist militias, stressing that their recent attacks have further worsened Yemen’s already dire humanitarian situation and reaffirming its steadfast commitment to Yemen’s sovereignty and security, Saudi Arabia’s security, and regional stability.
Speaking at the UN Security Council briefing on Yemen, UK Acting Permanent Representative to the United Nations Kate Foster said more than 22 million Yemenis need humanitarian assistance, while more than 18 million face food insecurity and over 2.2 million children under five suffer from acute malnutrition.
She said recent weeks had witnessed a dangerous escalation of violence in Yemen and the region as a result of reckless Houthi attacks, including drone and missile attacks against Saudi Arabia, attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea, and Iranian aircraft violations of Yemeni airspace.
The UK called on Iran to end its support for the Houthi terrorist militias, stressing that such support threatens Yemen’s stability.
