Leadership Council Chairman and Council member Al-Zubaidi participate in Climate Ambition Summit
[20/09/2023 05:03]

New York – Saba
President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi, Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, along with Council member Aidaroos Al-Zubaidi, participated today, Wednesday, in the high-level Climate Ambition Summit sponsored by the United Nations in conjunction with the UN General Assembly meetings, which began yesterday, Tuesday.

The international meeting aspires to accelerate the pace of work undertaken by governments, commercial and financial institutions, local authorities and civil societies around the world, with the aim of pushing towards an immediate and deep reduction in emissions over the next three decades.

Although Yemen is one of the countries that contribute least to the emissions caused by climate change, it is at the forefront of the countries most affected by its negative repercussions, including expectations of possible depletion of groundwater, as well as the risks of rising sea levels in basins near coastal areas, which constitutes a serious threat to the lives and livelihoods of the Yemeni population and economy, as stated in a previous speech by the Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council.

Changes associated with rising temperatures and disruption of the rainy seasons have also contributed to the spread of swamps, as a result of floods and torrents that have led to the loss of thousands of lives over the past few years. Yemen's environmental components are exposed to devastating effects due to climate change in light of the collapse of the
government protection network under the effect of the war sparked by the Houthi militia supported by the Iranian regime.

The United Nations warns that the damage caused by the climate crisis is already widespread, and that global greenhouse gas emissions remain at record levels.
